John McGahern

John McGahern, born in Dublin in 1934, lives in Leitrim. His first novel, The Barracks, was published in 1963 when McGahern worked as a schoolteacher. He soon travelled to London to continue writing after his second book, The Dark, was banned under Ireland’s censorship legislation. He taught at several British and North American universities during the 1970s and 1980s. McGahern was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin in 1991.
