August Strindberg

(Johan) August Strindberg, born in Stockholm in 1849, was a playwright, novelist and short-story writer. His first published novel Röda Rummet (1879), brought him national fame. Strindberg’s writing continued to inspire but also to cause controversy; he was prosecuted, and acquitted, for blasphemy over his description of the Last Supper in the novella The Eward of Virtue. Marital difficulties, psychotic episodes, and heavy drinking all factored in Strindberg’s life and left their mark on his writing. Strindberg wrote more than 70 plays before his death in 1912.
