Garry Winogrand

Garry Winogrand was born in 1928 and raised in the Bronx. He briefly studied painting at Columbia University until a friend showed him the darkroom in the basement of the school’s architecture building. For some years he worked as a freelance photojournalist and in advertising; by the 1960s his distinctive themes and style had begun to emerge. In 1978 he moved to Los Angeles, where he took pictures incessantly. Winogrand died in 1984.
