Shirin Neshat
Shirin Neshat was born in Iran in 1957 and went to the USA to study art. After completing her studies in the University of California at Berkeley, she moved to New York and first returned to Iran in 1990. During her absence, the country had gone through the Islamic revolution of 1979 and had changed completely. Neshat achieved international fame upon the publication of her photographic series Women of Allah. She participated in documenta 11 with a film installation and exhibited works at the Biennale in Sydney, Kwangju and São Paulo. She was awarded a Golden Lion at the Biennale in Venice in 1999, received the ICP Infinity Award for Art in 2002, and was named honorary professor at the Berlin Institute of Arts in 2004. Neshat lives in New York.
