Harry Gruyaert

Harry Gruyaert was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and studied at the Ecole du Cinéma et de Photographie à Bruxelles (1959-1962). In 1969, he travelled for the first time to Morocco. This work won the Kodak Prize in 1976. In 1972, he was living in London when he decided to photograph the news and popular culture as it played out on his TV screen – the flight of Apollo, the Munich Olympic Games, American and English ads and TV series. By playing with the TV antenna, he obtained the saturated, flashy colours that are the hallmark of the ‘TV Shots’ series, exhibited at the Delpire Gallery in Paris in 1974, at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels and the ICP in New York, and at the Phillips de Pury Gallery in New York, 2007. His images are produced after long reflection and with close attention to the finest detail, best appreciated in the contemplative context of exhibitions and books. Harry Gruyaert is a Member of Magnum Photos since 1986.
