Alberto Korda

Alberto Korda was born in Havana and took many jobs before beginning as a photographer’s assistant. After the Revolution Korda was one of the leading photographers for the Cuban newspaper Revolución and closely followed Fidel Castro throughout the 1960s. Two decades later he became internationally recognised as one of the most important figures in the history of Cuban Photography. From 1968 to 1978 he concentrated on underwater photography until a Japanese exhibition stimulated international interest in his work. Korda suffered a fatal heart attack in Paris in 2001 while presenting an exhibition of his work.
