El Lissitzky

El Lissitzky (1890–1941), one of the formative artists of constructivism, created, in addition to his geometric pictorial compositions, placard designs, avant-garde architectural projects and pioneering photographic work. Born Lazar Markovich Lisitskii, he grew up in the Russian province of Smolensk. He completed a diploma in engineering and architecture in 1916 from the Riga Technological University, and was invited by Marc Chagall to join the faculty of the Vitebsk Popular Art School in 1919. In 1921, he was teaching at Vkhutemas with Vladimir Tatlin, and a member of the Constructivist group. His collaborations with Ilya Ehrenburg soon followed.
