David Octavius Hill
David Octavius Hill (1802-1870), was a popular Scottish painter and early pioneer of photography. Upon his commission to produce a group portrait of the 470 founders of the Free Church of Scotland, he began his collaboration with Robert Adamson (1821-1848), in order to produce the calotypes from which he would work. Their partnership stretched beyond this initial task and saw the creation of an estimated 3,000 images before Adamson’s early death. Hill then returned to painting.
