All excellent things are as difficult as they are rare Spinoza Ethics (1677)
It is not easy to balance the economies of scale battering away at the foundations of book publishing with the manner in which we try to do things at Steidl. To carve a financial equilibrium out of the contradiction between our wish to create books as well as they possibly can be made, whilst making them available at a democratic price, is difficult and regularly, impossible.
Yet the desire to produce excellent things, for each and every book to be a Grand Oeuvre within the artist’s career, means we impose few limitations. If they have to become more expensive and less available, then so be it. This flies in the face of the traditional publishing model, which requires large print runs and reprints to feed the market and most of our books quickly become collectors’ items. One solace we can offer is that people should buy our books early because the original price will be making a significant saving on the price in the secondary market. Most importantly, we hope you will buy our books because they challenge and excite you and we believe they will live up to your expectations.
