THEN & NOW special edition

by Ed Ruscha

Steidl

In August of 2005, the renowned German publisher and master printer, Gerhard Steidl, published Edward Ruscha's first major photographic multiple object. The project was initiated by Ruscha in 1973 when he photographed all the buildings of the entire length of Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Echoing his famous artist's book, Every Building on The Sunset Strip (1966), he produced two continuous panoramic views of the north and south sides of the street. In 2004 he returned and directed the re-shooting of Hollywood Boulevard to produce two further panoramic images. The 1973 images were made in black and white, and the 2004 in color.

These four images were then combined over 142 pages of the artist's book published by Steidl, aligning the 1973 and 2004 images of the north side along the top of the page, and the south side of the boulevard inverted along the bottom of the page. This was Ruscha's first independently produced artist's book since 1978.

These 142 pages were then used by Ruscha to produce his first major photographic multiple in a signed and numbered edition of 10 copies (6 APs + 2 PPs)
