As a student Timm Rautert started an extensive program of experimentation with the photographic medium which he concluded in 1973 under the title “Bildanalytische Photographie”. His subsequent work in photo-journalism focused on social themes in German culture. At the same time he worked on projects of his own — the most well-known being the series “Deutsche in Uniform” which he produced in 1974. Beginning the following year, he published several books in co-operation with Otl Aicher which tried to develop an analytic form of presentation for reportage photography. Since the 1990s he has devoted most of his time to extensive portrait series. When We Don’t See You, You Don’t See Us Either is the definitive monograph on Timm Rautert’s career.
