Marie José Burki’s new videos and photographs are studies of contemporary society which expose sociopsychological structures. Staged with a light touch, her work exposes socio-psychological structures, which, in continuing art history’s still life tradition, anchor themselves to things. De nos jours (Of Our Days) circles with slow camera movements half-staged social situations – in a park on a Sunday afternoon or after an opulent meal. What the people do, how they appear, how they communicate with each other, how they let themselves go and withdraw into themselves: all of this can be observed from the external view of the artist who simultaneously takes part and entwines voyeurism with exhibitionism. This volume translates the syntactical language of videos into a condensed sequence of photographs.
