Inflated Histories
Steidl & Partners
In Paul McCarthy’s oeuvre different means of expression form a coherent, strongly recognizable visual vocabulary, whose influence on the art of the past decades can hardly be over estimated. Looking at our pop and entertainment culture through it’s very own glasses, Paul McCarthy’s inflatable sculptures add a whole new chapter to the ancient book of sculpture. Middelheim Museum, Antwerp, is devoting an extensive show to these unusual monuments, including recent inflatables such as “Daddies Ketchup Bottle” and “Henry Moore.” The show will also include a significant number of newly commissioned works. This publication illustrates all Inflatables realized by McCarthy to date and shows how intimately connected this body of work is with the artists’ various means of expression.
