The Los Angeles exhibition highlights the unique interplay of utopia and dystopia–sunshine and noir–that characterised creativity in Los Angeles in the postwar era, and which has come to have a vital impact on art today. Works by artists such as Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, Ed Kienholz, Sam Francis and James Turrell form the obvious core of the exhibition, but the era will also be reflected in films and architecture, including the so-called Case Study House Program.
