Andy Warhol
by Andy Warhol
Moderna Museet
In February 1968, Moderna Museet in Stockholm opened its doors with a major solo exhibition of works by Andy Warhol. A substantial part of the exhibition consisted of the book, which was not to be an analytical exhibition catalogue of Warhol’s works, but a publication that conveyed Warhol’s aesthetics without burdensome text. Instead of essays, they let the artist speak for himself, in short quotations published in English and Swedish. This is where Warhol’s most famous statement was first seen in print: “In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” Most of the images in the book are from the photo album Andy Warhol donated to Moderna Museet in connection with the exhibition. The album contains several hundred black-and-white photos from Warhol’s life in the second half of the 1960s. The photographers Billy Name and Stephen Shore both got their first assignments thanks to these documentary photographic series of artists, rock stars, models, actors and others in the circles around Warhol at the Factory. The other featured photographers in the book are Rudolph Burckhardt, Eric Pollitzer and John D.Schiff.
