- For over a decade Juergen Teller has worked with Marc Jacobs on the advertising campaigns for each of the Men’s and Woman’s Marc Jacobs collections, Marc by Marc Accessories and perfumes lines. Teller’s idiosyncratic visual style and use of unusual models has been instrumental in establishing what has become one of the pre-eminent fashion brands of our times. Reflecting the intelligence and individuality of the Marc Jacobs’ brand, the models have included Sofia Coppola, Charlotte Rampling, Meg White, Kim Gordan and Thursten Moore, Michael Stipe, Rufus Wainwright, Harmony Korine, Cindy Sherman, William Eggleston, Samantha Morton, Winona Ryder, Roni Horn, Victoria Beckham and Juergen Teller himself among others…

Juergen Teller’s campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Helmut Lang, and his fashion editorials for magazines over the last two decades, have been credited with changing the face of fashion photography by virtue of their fresh and un-manufactured tone. Teller makes little distinction between his fashion work, commissioned portraits for magazines, and the photographs he takes for himself. All aspects of his work rely on establishing an intimacy between subject and photographer, setting up a non-hierarchical and slightly irreverent relationship which ultimately gives the viewer the sense of truth revealed.
In recent years, Teller has exhibited a mixture of fashion and commissioned works, alongside self-portraits, family photographs and scenes from his Bavarian home, which together examine his own world and persona as a photographer. The title The Master is a tongue-in cheek continuation of that exploration, inspired by recent adventures with two of his heroes, the photographers William Eggleston and Nobuyoshi Araki. Portraits of both men were the starting point for the exhibition and this catalogue, which also contains images of other people whose mysterious magic fascinates Teller: Marilyn Manson, Kurt Cobain and Simon McBurney, amongst others. The selection for The Master also includes theatrical self-portraits from Teller’s Louis XV project with Charlotte Rampling, pictures of non-celebrity subjects from his professional and personal life, and a number of still lifes from a recent return home to Nürnberg. The combination of all these images is a record of energies and residues captured, considered, and, ultimately, lost.

There are certain times in certain places when particular places come to the fore. Those times and those faces demand to be documented. Bold & Beautiful is the result of this impulse for social documentation that has led Ezra Petronio, Editor-in-Chief of Paris based fashion and arts magazine, Self Service, across borders, organically following the intricate web of the magazine’s ‘extended family tree’, attempting through his photographs to reveal the creative forces who share and shape Self Service magazine’s cultural landscape.
Over a few years, hundreds of people slipped through our doors to pose in front of the flash of his original 1970s Polaroid camera — intimate moments, one-on-one conversations, resulting in the revelation of each subject’s inner beauty and stature, a subtle combination of genuine sincerity, truth, and an inevitable touch of glamour. Not a pre-meditated grouping, but rather an organically unraveled network of people: designers, musicians, artists, photographers, writers, thinkers, people who make up our cultural world — establishment and avant-garde, artistic community and fashionable society, old friends, new friends and friends of friends. Unsuspecting members of the cultural community to which they all belong, they reflect individually and collectively the very essence of today’s creative soul.

- Ohne Titel
- Spawned by a commission from fashion designer Marc Jacobs for an advertising campaign, Ohne Titel is a collection of largely unpublished images of Juergen Teller and Cindy Sherman which derived from the initial concept. Both artists are known for blurring boundaries: film and fashion, advertising and art, public and private, real and fictitious. In Sherman’s well known series, Untitled Film Stills series (1977-1980), she played a number of mysterious characters vaguely reminiscent of scenes in international cinema. Sherman’s long career has included several fashion series in 1983 and 1993. Juergen Teller’s debut was marked by the front cover of Sueddeutsche Zeitung featuring a nude model with the word ‘Versace’ drawn in a heart across her chest. Teller epitomises the shift away from formal fashion photography to the more raw, apparently spontaneous look perfected in his Marc Jacobs campaigns and his personal work.
