Jorge Luis Borges

Jorge Luis Borges, born in Buenos Aires in 1899, was an essayist, poet and short story writer. After studying in Europe, during which time he became a member of the Ultraist literary group, Borges began his career as a writer. He was Director of the Argentine National Library from 1955 until 1973; when he resigned upon the re-election of Juan Perón. In 1961 Borges shared the International Publishers’ Prize with Samuel Beckett. He died in Geneva in 1986.
